Shimoga, the city’s name is derived from “Shivmoga.” According to a legend, Lord Shiva is known to have drunk the River Tunga water using Mogge, thus this place is named Shiv-mogga. According to another theory, the name of this city is derived from “Sihi-Mogge” means “sweet pot.”

This district is known to form the south tip of the Mauryan Empire of Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BC. During the later centuries, it was ruled by the Kadambas in the 4th century, Chalukyas in the 6th century, Rashtrakutas and Ganges in the 8th century, Hoysalas in the 11th century, and Vijayanagara rulers in the 15th century. During the sixteenth century, the city got a sovereign identity under the rule of Keladi Nayakas. The city became a part of Mysore Kingdom in the 17th century until India got its Independence in 1947 and the state of Mysore was merged into the Republic India. During the movement of Satyagraha, Mahatma Gandhi visited this place to initiate fights for national freedom. On November 1, 2006, the Karnataka government announced Shimoga remaining to Shivamogga together with 9 other cities of the state. Central Government approved the request in October 2014. Finally, the city was named Shimong on November 1. 2014.
