Devoted to Goddess Durga, Kunjapuri temple is one of the 3 Shaktipeethas in the Tehri District that were established by the Jagadguru Shankaracharya. Chandrabadni and Surkanda Devi are the two other Shakti Peethas that together form the holy triangle. Shakti Peethas are known to be the places where Goddess Sati’s body parts fell down when Lord Shiva was taking her body parts, roaming unconsciously in the Himalayan range of Bharatbarsh after Maa Sati flung herself in yajna fires after some insulting remarks were made by her father for her husband. Lord Shiva took Sati’s body on his shoulders in sorrow and started doing Tandav in anger. He even refused to do the last customs. Brahma, the creator of the universe, thought that if Mata Sati’s body didn’t get the right incineration according to the Hindu Shastra, she could not come in a new life as Goddess Parvati. Moreover, Lord Vishnu felt that Lord Shiva’s pain and anger could result in the destruction of the entire Universe. Since no one could face or control the outrage of Lord Shiva, so Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut Sati’s body into pieces. As a result, body parts of Mata Sati started falling down at different places while Lord Shiva was busy in Tandava. The places where the body parts of Sati fell are now known as the Shakti Peethas. Kunjapuri temple is one of those places and is worshipped since then.
