CHITRAKOTE WATERFALLS: The majestic beauty

  • Bastar
  • Chhattisgarh

Overview

A natural waterfall on the Indravati river about 29 meters height and it becomes the widest waterfall during the monsoon as its width becomes almost 300 meters. Because of its horseshoe shape, it is also known as Niagara Falls of India. It is located approximately 38 kilometers to the west of the city of Jagdalpur situated in the district of Bastar in the state of Chhattisgarh. Located near Kanger Valley National Park and Teerathgarh falls it is a beautiful tourist site.

As the river valley grows and flows downstream, it consists of sandstone such as quartz but near the Chitrakote falls it transforms to archaeon granite and gneisses. It is one of the heritage sites with geomorphic interest as it consists of geological features of heritage value. Not only Indian institutes but many international institutions have supported this theory for example the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the International Association of Geomorphologists. the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS)

The river originates from the Vindhya Hills in the Kalahandi district of Odisha. As it flows in the westward direction, the river forms a fall in the Chitrakote, and then it enters the state of Telangana, and in the end, it mixes up with Godavari river at Bhadrakali. This whole destination is about 240 miles. Rainbows can be usually seen as the sun rays reflect on the mist of the waterfall during the rainy months, i.e. from July to October, and it is a beauty to behold. As it, culverts through the plains of Jagdalpur the river flows slowly on the upstream side of the falls due to its zigzag nature of the flow. There is very little dense vegetation at the valley side. The river crosses the forested area of Bodhghat below the falls. It has a radical change in its flow conditions. The forest in the downstream area and aeration processes filter the silt present in the river. Usually, the weather is very soothing and pleasant, but it gets hot during the summer season as there is very little vegetation and not enough dense trees to provide shade.
